Power generation is the term used to describe the process where an energy source is treated and used to generate electricity.

Gas-fired power stations produce up to 50 per cent fewer carbon dioxide emissions than conventional coal-fired electricity plants.

To produce electricity the gas is burnt, which creates a hot stream of air under pressure that then spins a turbine. In a combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) system, the exhaust heat from the gas turbine is recovered and used to create steam, which drives a second conventional steam turbine, making the gas generation system more efficient.

Gas-fired power generation is gathering momentum across Australia with approvals for gas-fired plants granted at Tallawarra, New South Wales, Shaw River, Victoria and Tepko, South Australia in the 2010–11.
