Distribution and networks

Distribution is the final step in delivering natural gas to customers. There are 22 gas distributors in Australia; they sometimes own the gas pipeline network and supply gas to meet household needs. Each state and territory receives gas from different distributors. Distributors are also responsible for the quality and reliability of the natural gas that is used in the home.

Distributors transport large volumes of gas, which service 3.9 million residential homes and businesses via 81,000 kilometres of underground pipes.

The Australian gas distribution network provides the vital link between gas producers and consumers; supplying households and businesses of Australia with a vital energy resource.

There are 22 electricity and gas network organisations across Australia which operate in each individual state. Network companies are responsible for the transmission of gas throughout pipeline networks between producers and retailers, and therefore are the first port of call for any maintenance or power failure issues that occur as a result of pipeline disruption.
