Gas-fired electricity generation will make a much bigger contribution to the electricity generation mix in Victoria in the future, says the Victorian Government’s framework for energy policy planning until 2030, Victoria’s Energy Future.
The report, recently released by Victorian Minister for Energy and Resources Peter Batchelor and Department of Primary Industries Secretary Richard Bold, notes that there is potential for new gas discoveries in the Otway and Gippsland basins to supply the state’s long-term needs.
The report also states that although Victoria currently has the most extensive gas reticulation network in Australia, bigger pipelines may be needed in the future to transport gas from other states with a greater gas resource potential, such as Queensland.
The linking up of gas markets along Australia’s east coast may result in gas price increases if interstate resources are developed for export, says the report.
