The Clio-3 discovery well is located in Chevron’s WA-205-P permit area. Situated in 971 m of water and drilled to a depth of 4,309 m, the well penetrated approximately 79 m of net gas pay.

Clio-3 marks the third consecutive discovery on the Clio structure.

In addition, the Sappho-1 exploration well encountered approximately 75 m of net gas pay. The well has been drilled to a depth of 4,696 m.

Chevron Asia Pacific Exploration and Production Company President Jim Blackwell said these wells are "the latest in a succession of back-to-back discoveries [which] will underpin the Gorgon and Wheatstone projects.”

The Wheatstone LNG Development will provide commercial domestic gas to the local market with production expected to commence in 2015. It will have a capacity of up to 10 million tonnes per annum with a 250 million cubic feet per day onshore domestic gas plant at Ashburton North, Western Australia forming part of the development. Other joint venture partners include Apache, Kuwait Foreign Petroleum Exploration Company and Tokyo Electric Power Company.

More tests are being conducted on data gathered from the discovery well and additional work is required to determine the extent and commercial viability of the discovery.

Chevron Corporation, through its Australian subsidiary, holds a combined 67 per cent interest and Shell Development holds the remaining interest.
